Hunt 3:01pm Friday 23 June 2000 Wende and I are on I-10 West at mile marker 751 We passed 631 cars by using the HOV lane. Awww yeah. Wende described scenes from the movie Seven. Ewww. 4:02 pm - mile marker 677 I just wrote a 3 page letter to Bender, my favorite character on Futurama. Yes, he is a cartoon and a robot, making him twice non-human, but I still asked for an autographed portrait. 5:48pm - mile marker 561 We just passed the car dealership "Red McCombs" !!! Back in the day, when I was ten or eleven, my parents took Fred and I there to buy a car. We were in the parking lot and this balding guy came out. I said quietly, "If that's Red, he doesn't need m'combs!" My first pun! My parents were impressed and groaned appropriately. 8:05pm We have arrived at Sundown Carriage House in Hunt, Texas. Apollo, the big golden retriever greeted us, expecting and getting lots of lovin'. Sandra (human), greeted us and introduced herself and Apollo and Hawthorne, their huge great dane. She showed us around, showed us our room. Very beautiful overlooking the river. I wanna swim tonight. Before dinner, Wende and I played on the trampoline! I did relatively great for having not been on one for over a year I think. I did 10 consecutive front flips (from my back to my back), like I used to do in gymnastics. 8:24pm (downtown Hunt) Shelton is our waiter at Elaine's Table. Our table overlooks the river. 9:30pm I ordered chicken and mushrooms something and Wende had steak. As we were leaving, we saw someone who looked like she might be Elaine. "Are you Elaine?" I inquired. "Did you like your food?" "Yes." "then I'm Elaine!" Upon request, she described the story of the name of the restaurant: She went to a restaurant and her table was reserved with a sign, "Elaine's Table" She decided it was a great name for a restaurant! (Her version of the story was a bit longer) later that day Wende and I lay on lounge chairs on the rock dock gazing up at the stars. We saw a couple of shooting stars. She commented about how amazing it must have been to live back in the day and know all the constellations and tell time from the stars. I told her the stars back then were brighter because there was less pollution, not to mention they were newer back then. Nice joke, but Wende was too tired to get it. I explained what I have heard about the ages of stars and the sun and that a few thousand years usually wasn't much time in terms of stars changing brightness. 'cept of course for variables stars, pulsars, and novae. hunt 10:42am Saturday 24 June 2000 Right after waking up, I swam across the river, which was pretty freezing at first.. I'm guessing 60 feet across and clamboured up on the rocks. I walked along the bottom of the cliff which I was unable to climb. No snakes or spiders, but met one wasp/bee thing who buzzed menacingly near me, but didn't attack me. While standing on top of a tall rock, ignoring visions of the rock tumbling out from underneath me, I looked for wende across the river. I didn't see her, so started walking back down. Soon as I got to shore, she got to the other shore. Swam across and had breakfast met the peeps and their kids and stuff. After breakfast, Wende and I took a nap (otherwise she didn't feel like it was a vacation) and she pointed out we had never taken a vacation together. Now packing our stuff to go drive around lookin' for places to get married after we jump on the trampoline some. 12:11pm I did 11 front flips. At checkout, we talked to Al and Sandra randomly. He told me about his kids and Wende paid the bill. $145 including tax for the night. We asked them about locations of different lodges that may host a wedding. One place charges $10,000 just for the site, not counting anything extra. We just reserved all the cabins of a lodge on the river! This is where Wende's family reunion was held a couple of years ago. Now that our mission is accomplished, we can go play!! 1:30 pm lunch and wedding list 2:32pm Ate at Hunt store which sells groceries and is a restsurant. Chillin' under Stonehenge II, while Wende gets my shoes these stickers hurt! 4:46pm - miles 313.2 traveled. (written by Wende) We canoed at River Bend Inn. Rob ogled Christie (sp). 7:53pm - mile 682 (written by Wende) Rob just cleaned the windshield, intentionally trying to spray the car behind us. At first, it seemed that it wasn't working but just when we were ready to give up, they switched lanes and turned their wiper blades on. "It's working, it's working!" Rob cried. Victory. 9:33pm - 251 miles traveled (written by Wende) We stopped for dinner at Sonic in Colombus - talked about all the small-town-hanging-out that Rob didn't do in Tomball. We just passed a small truck very much on fire. Called 911 but they already knew about it. Home safely around 10:30pm |
