Entries this day: Lock-in ktru Lock in December 2001 So last night was our HAC YAC rally planning lock-in. How incredibly amazing for me to watch the youth running the meetings and pretty much having everything under control. When I was the adult host of Houston rally in 1996 / 1997, I was running the meetings and showing the youth what it took to run a rally. Since then I remember just being vaguely involved one year, just offering the main components and letting them hash out the details. Last night.... I slept through the meeting. Now That's youth empowerment! Yes, there were other adults there to offer help if needed, and in some cases (fucking loudmouth Evelyn) unneeded help. But I basically kept my trap shut except for one time when I mouthed, "just shut the fuck up" and went back to sleep. Someone (Erica?) commented that I mouthed something up at the ceiling when I was sleeping, and I was all, "oh yeah, I was, um, not very impressed with someone at the meeting," and she was all, "oh yeah, I know who you're talking about." Not necessarily the epitome of excellent lead by example, but whatever. - - - - After the meeting I was pretty much awake and we played a few rounds of Sardines (Amy had a great hiding spot and used Graham as a decoy, but I should have been able to tell by his pants.), and then Mafia (Phat Pat as god and then Erica as god) and True Colors and then a couple rounds of Truth or Dare (I stuck my hand in the ceiling fan), and then most people were falling asleep except for Jaime, David and Pat, so I told a few of my long jokes: Pink Elephant, Moe and Joe, Kid who loved to do dishes, and the joke about the snail. Wonderful fun for the whole group. Slept about .5 hour until it was time to wake up and we cleaned up and I went back to sleep in the YRUU room. I found myself alone there when I woke up at 10:30am this morning. Susie had left me a note, though. I love my Youth! ktru 6:38pm Saturday 8 December 2001 I'm at KTRU now, waiting for the basketball sports announcer guys to connect us to the game. The game hasn't started yet - about 30 minutes, so we still have some time. I called them a bit ago and he said it was all good. I got the 7-10pm Saturday shift with Donna again, even though I'm lax in reviewing CDs. I checked out three CDs tonight and I intend to listen to them during the basketball game, beginning the review asap. 6:43pm They are connected. I'm quite thankful to have that connection done so easily as opposed to last time! 6:57pm I just wrote the entry about the lock-in and the DJ before me asked if I was ready to go with the game. "Um, sure!" and I walked into the control room and noted we were broadcasting dead air. As I grabbed a CD at random from the stacks and cued it up, I asked him, "did you announce your last song?" so I would know where to start. He had. "KTRU Houston, we are now going to play a little bit of music before the basketball game begins in about 10 minutes, thank you for your patience. What I've got cued up for you is _____ (whatever)___ by ___(whomever)____." Please note that as I was speaking "What I've got cued up for you," I was grabbing the CD case to see what in fact I had cued up. I had no idea. I love running the radio station on the edge of chaos and fucking up. It gets my adrenaline swirling happily through me. Just got a call from Amanda at Atheletics, about 3 minutes until 3 minute countdown. About 2 minutes now I'm sure. This is probably my last entry until after my shift. next day Game was longer than I expected; I only got 30 minutes of music playing time from 9:30 to 10. Still fun stuff. prev day next day |
