Entries this day: Dream Work Yumi_isn't_older_than_me Zzzz cancel okay_zzzz Dream 7:43am JST Monday 12 January 2004 I typed this dream with my eyes closed; don't have time to spellcheck it now. We all got a bunch of furniture near the book store at the corner in Tsunashima and had to carry it home. Most of us got chests of drawers. I got a chest with two drawers side by side that loked double deep but were just single deep with a large front face thing. Laura Caddell (YRUU) was going to help me carry it to my apartment over the river and she went walking that waay to get something to help us carry it, and aI found that we could carry it ourselves; it wasn't that heavry and I called her name. Had to yelll pretty oudly to get her attention and I was a bit worried aht I was remembering te wrong name, but I was correct. She turned around and came back and I had put the drawers on the side (which is how I found out they were only half size) and she grabbed one end of the chest and I grabbed the other and we hefted it up and soon as we really started walking, we were sudenly in line behind all the other YRUUers who had their own chests, but were stopped in line waiting to toss them onto a big greyhound type bus that waa donated to us to carry our stuff. The bus was right behind a big plane cockpit and we were tossig our chests into the plane and some of th boys had climbed through the bus windshield to get to the plane. I wasn't 100% sure they had done that, so I asked the bus driver how I was supposed to get to the plane and he was like through the windshield. It was a really thin (not tall) windshield and I climbed through kinda on my hands and feet (had to be prone) but didnd't eally have anywhere to put my hands or knees or feet and I hit some switches on the control panel of the bus and turned on his horn and somethig else. But I made it through and tossed my box forward toward the plane, oh I had already done that but it had fallen short of the plane so when I climbed through, the bus driver noticed ow far it was to teh plane so he said, "here I will scoot forward a bit a" and the plane tarted toooting forwad as well and the box that had fallen to the ground was repeatedly disappearing underneath the bus, which I knew was chronoligically impossible, but I went with it and reached down and snagged it the next time it passed by with no problem and I tossed it onto the plane. A piece of string that I needed for my bo was caught on the cockpit control panel, whcih was really old and looked like a circuit board from an old 1975 ish calculator or something, and I had to gingerly lift the string off the control panel so that it wouldn't interfere with the pilots' flight and I sorta hit the yoke of the plane and I hoped I hadn't knocked it too far to make the plane start moving off course cause there was no one to fly it properly. the dream switched studying Japanese and there was one teacher and two students, me and a Japanese woman who was studying English and at one point the woman goes, "I don't know what "wear first time" means" or something and I translated it to Japanese "ichi kiru mae" and the sensei was like "yep" and I'm like "really?" and then I woke up and I'm like oh maybe not. but it still felt pretty good to be right. permalinkWork 6:09pm JST Monday 12 January 2004 Fuck; the train I've just settled myself onto is ending at the next station. No wonder I got a seat. Dammit. Anyway, work was goodish but fucking busy to start because today is Coming of Age Day in Japan for those who will turn 20 this year. Um, Rachel, Carla's roommate saved our ass today because Ali called in sick but she came in to cover for him so the schedule wasn't made worse. Also, she taught my last class for me and I got to teach voice for her. I was just like to excited to do another class (3 person level 5) as my last class before I see janette; I'm like gotta zooooom and stuff. She covered the class and the money thing was she was so cool about it; we didn't ask anyone; just changed the class at the end after having said nothing about it since lunch. She goes, "so you wanna do it?" "Yeah that would be great." "Files..." and she assumed the drop box. "yep" Awesome. Thank you, Rachel. - - - - I had たかひろ, the smart kid who will sit and pout for the entire class if we try to have a normal class with him, so I started fucking around telling him all the wrong names for the animals (after he wouldn't respond to the option of spelling the animal names) and I tried to have a fucked up game of Go Fish where I insisted all the wrong names for the inconsistent right animals were right, and he didn't quite get into it, but we did have a spider batting competition, sliding the spider cards across the table like soccer kinda and after he was thoroughly enjoying the chances to smack the cards, experimenting with different smacking techniques, I made him spell S P I D E R before he got the cards to smack again. Once he was spelling spider consistently well, I switched to the dog-nope-"too easy"-monkey cards and made him spell M O N K E Y before he could have monkey batting practice. Excellent success: Takahiro spelling spider and monkey. (but nat spider monkey (oh well)) - - - - One class was absolute hell with three unsolid 7B students who were all super teacher dependent, all looking at me for everything and to say everything. ug. - - - - Oh, my first class included KG みき, and without planning it specifically for her, I chose lesson number 50 (cause with one of the other students I had done lessons 47, 48, and 49, in that order, so I was like, "welp, number 50 is it") cause it was available for all three students and it just turned out to be giving directions, which みき judges she can't do. Perfect. She was clear about that in lesson too. "I hate this kind of question" ("how do I get from ____ to ____?") and I said, "thank you. It's good for me to know that." I had sortof an epiphany at the end of the lesson, basically describing how I give directions: "just take it one little step at a time and it's like describing a series of pictures. So, from right here: 'go out of this building' then what? 'go left' then what? 'go up the escalators, not down' then what? 'there are ticket machines on the right and gates on the left. get a ticket, go through the gates.' then what? 'there are three lines, one blue, one orange, one red' or give the names 'there are three lines, Nambu, Tokaido, Kehein Tohoku. Look for the one on the left, the red line, the Kehein Tohoku. Go down the steps' now what? 'look for Yokohama or Tokyo' where do you want to go? let's say Shinagawa 'Okay, go toward Tokyo. Get off at the first stop.' Shinagawa - now what? where do we want to go? Shibuya? 'go upstairs. look for Yamanote. Go down the stairs. Get on the train that says Shibuya.' Bang. Just a series of steps, little pictures." I really hope it helped. 6:59pm Yumi lesson now. permalinkYumi isn't older than me 10:19pm JST Monday 12 January 2004 Today I was quite distracted during the lesson with Yumi; I was dancing to the music and singing (the songs are somewhat distracting to me: "Love Shack" etc) and stuff. For some reason I asked her how old she was and she was like, "I can't hear you," and I thought she was making a joke like, "eh, what's that sonny? I can't hear you." But she wasn't exactly; though she did get the joke when I explained it. (I really like it when Yumi gets the ヤッタア! look on her face when she understands something that I've been explaining to her.) Anyway, she was certain she is older than me, and I am certain the other way and I was trying to get out of the confines of Gateway 21 but wanted to hang with her so I was like, "Okay, I bet you dinner that I'm older than you." Had to explain what exactly I meant "If I am younger, then I will buy dinner; if you are younger then you will buy dinner." and she got it and hesitated, then assured herself of her belief and was like "okay." "But!" she interrupted before I gave my age, "But, you tell me your age, and I will only say older or younger." Fair enough. So I pulled out my gaijin card and showed her. She looked, then got up and bowed to me, saying something that I'm sure translates to "oh honorable wise one please forgive my foolishness" or some shit like that. I was like ummm and bowed back to her. She seemed to reveal her age at least partially by saying "I thought you are 25 oh, um I thought you are 27" which I thought was kinda funny. We went to El Torito (the name of which we had previously discussed under the implied heading "what did you do last week?" because she had gone twice to TGI Friday's, which is just above El Torito) though we couldn't think of its name. I came up with Tapatias, but she was sure that was wrong. Random talk and chat and stuff and she told me about having seen some sumo / kick boxing / K1 / etc famous martial arts guys at a steak restaurant (after I revealed that I don't like beef) and I was like Hmmmm Sumo is in town; janette would like to see that (I imagine) "hey do you want to go watch sumo next week?" So we may go see sumo on Monday or Tuesday next week. After the meal, I ate the bed of lettuce from her plate and explained that I am a rabbit, but not NOVA usagi, and she did the little nova usagi dance from the TV commercials and I'm like, "never seen it" and explained that I don't watch TV, etc and I forget the point of bringing up that conversation. permalinkZzzz 10:40pm JST Monday 12 January 2004 I'm on the train home now. I'm glad I'm tired. janette left for here 1.75 hours ago I think. That means she'll arrive in 12 hours, which is not right. Unless the flight is mysteriously long for some reason. Anyway, I'm tired and I'm glad cause I don't want to spend a lot of time awake waiting for her to get here. That's part of why I wanted to go out with Yumi tonight, to distract me this evening from thinking about janette not being here. permalinkcancel 12:00am JST Tuesday 13 January 2004 Cancel that going to sleep business. I found my XCode CD from which I can apparently install an IDE for Java on my Mac. Awe. some. As it's installing, Dan and I are going to get some grub from the local conveni. permalinkokay zzzz 2:53am JST Tuesday 13 January 2004 Got close, but can't compile even the included projects. /usr/bin/jam -d1 JAMBASE=/Developer/Makefiles/pbx_jamfiles/ProjectBuilderJambase JAMFILE=- build ACTION=build _DEFAULT_GCC_VERSION=2.95.2 _GCC3_IS_IN_OFFICIAL_LOCATION=YES BUILD_STYLE=Development CPP_HEADERMAP_FILE=/Users/rob/HelloNewSwingApplet/build/HelloNewSwingApplet.build/HelloNewSwingApplet.build/HelloNewSwingApplet.hmap SRCROOT=/Users/rob/HelloNewSwingApplet OBJROOT=/Users/rob/HelloNewSwingApplet/build SYMROOT=/Users/rob/HelloNewSwingApplet/build DSTROOT=/tmp/HelloNewSwingApplet.dst warning: unknown rule ProcessJavaArchiveFiles ...updating 13 target(s)...
