AM

7:19am JST Friday 2 July 2004

I said to myself, "self, if someone emails my cellphone before 8am, I'm going to wake up at go jog."

janette emailed me. (She's getting her nose pierced!)

Carla!

1) In my quest to increase my genkinicity, I've considered what you
said about jogging in the mornings.

I haven't gone yet, and I'm not really sure I believe it can work for
me, but(!) today is the big day. I'm going to walk briskly at first,
just to get started.

2) I bought some hiking boots to go climb Mt Fuji on 12-13 July. 12 =
up, 13 = down. The only boots that were big enough for my monster
feet? Columbia Sportswear.

I hope you're well.

8:20am

Well, that was sortakinda fun. I found the park that people have talked about.. oh, Tom came out just as I started my brisk walk, and he started to run after me, and I was like, "are you late?"

"No, I'm just jogging merrily," but he was more running to the station, and would have thoroughly beat me there except he stopped to tie his shoe. He missed a train by like 15 seconds. Nightmare.

I found the park and climbed on some of the equipment and then half walked half jogged back. A bit light headed, a bit hungry.. gotta work out the parameters of this jogging thing. I cooked and ate two eggs and spinach and cheese after my adventure and chowed them.

Gotta head out to Japanese class now. I'm definitely more sweaty, and I might be more awake, but there's still some hunger; it's interesting to see the effects this jog has had on me.

Class

11:51am JST Friday 2 July 2004

Class was pretty good. Ayana went through all of my notes that I had written over the past two weeks and made a couple of corrections that Hitomi hadn't caught. That took most of thelesson, during which time I continued with the book, writing sentences and practicing kanji.

We looked briefly at a new grammar which meant "too much" "I drank too much coffee" or "I slept too long," or the like. The grammar wasn't too difficult, but I was having trouble coming up with results of too much activity.

My sentences were like, "I played too much tennis so my legs hurt," and "I studied too much so my head hurts," and "I watched too much TV so I couldn't watch a movie." Okay, finally a different grammar. Then I came up with sheer brilliance: "Ayana ate too many sweets, so she gave some to me."

Olivia

2:13pm JST Friday 2 July 2004

Just before I left for work, Olivia arrived at my room, looking for shelter and a shower after 3 days with neither. Wow. When I hugged her, she was like "I showered or changed in 3 days." I was like, "well I haven't either so don't worry about it."

Except I was lying and she wasn't.

I encouraged her to write her story; it's pretty interesting. She was abused by the boy she was nannying and the mom wouldn't help and when she could take no more (Olivia); she ran to the city and found the next bus left in 2 hours. Ran back up the hill and took the bus, 14 hours of bussing fun to Istanbul.

16 hours in some airport, and then 6 hours somewhere else, and she just arrived in Tokyo an hour ago.

Jen is out and about being crazy busy with her uni exam, work and private students and the pain of boyfriend breaking up with her. What a soap opera!

before work

11:04pm JST Friday 2 July 2004

Before work, I was super suprised to see Dan coming up to me on the train!

We hung out; we each had time to chill. Talked about his trip to Bali and his upcoming adventure to the rest of Thailand, Viet Nam and Cambodia. Man, I'm a punk cause I've never been there.

I just invoiced Dan 4000 yen for Yahoo BB! that I'm paying for at the old apartment.

work

Work has been cool so far. Three students; two more to go. First two students chose me and the next one gave me a 5-5. Awesome.

10:58pm

I got two 5-5s today! Whooooo!

I had a discussion with Simon who said that I take teaching way more seriously than he does. I was interested to hear that; I can't really imagine not being serious about teaching. Part of my argument is that I want to scare away the non serious students who don't study; teaching lumps is agonizing for me.

Kozue was my last student; we scoped her diary and I noted that her spelling is getting better and her sentence structures are getting more complicated. I informed her of both these points, and gave her a raving commentary in the Every Lesson field and Today's Lesson field of her profile.

I had Kumiko today; she loves the movie Finding Nemo, and has been using it to study. I explained the humor in two of Nemo's dad's lines: "That snail was about to charge!" and "You're letting them go to the drop off? Why don't you just fry them up and serve them with chips?"

She gave me one of my 5-5s. :-) I love happy students in fun lessons.
