AM

8:00am-ish IST Sunday 10 July 2005

Met up with Matt and Kris to get a taxi into town. I don't really want to walk the same trek again. I thought the taxi driver we found was cool though I couldn't really understand his accent. But then he kept driving a bit longer than what I expected. I was like, "here is cool" but he wanted to drive a little further. Grr. Kris was totally falling asleep in the back; she forgot to sleep last night. ;-)

Dublin Matt and Kris

8:30am IST Sunday 10 July 2005

In Dublin now on my handspring visor with no backspace. Walking around with Kris (from Canada) and Matt (the artist) .. they stopped in a little shop. Matt says:

i bouoght a lighter, (matt) kris used the cash mnachine it appears as though she got out 20 euros, i wonder if this will cover her expenses for the afternoon, although i suppose dublin is no shoppers paradise, i have 50 euros, and this will be the last place we will use them, should i find a token from ireland? or perhaps ill find those roller skates Ive been pining for, either way, the weather is fine, and irish girls are too. Ive always had a weakeness for redheads, although at the moment the one standing over there has no hair, just a red head. dublin appears to be a cross between manchester and france, lots of brick, talll buildings, wide streets, ok, thats all.

Germans byebye

10:57am IST Sunday 10 July 2005

Came back to the boat just to say bye to the German students who partied with us for 10 days. Kristen (from Arizona) told me they saw an amazing speaker in Belfast who had a basic point that no one can accurately claim to be a neutral mediator in a dispute. Everyone just needs to say "I am biased; I want to kill you all; now let's discuss the issue at hand." As she spoke, words tumbled from her mouth at light speed cause she was so excited. She said he was ten times faster than she, and that the non-native speakers had totally contorted faces trying to comprehend everything. She said it will take her 10 days to digest it all.

Shawn and I are about to head back out.

One big entry

9:49am PDT Wednesday 10 August 2005

Welcome to a new timezone. Welcome to having eaten after 35 hours of fasting. I was actually okay when I woke up, but after eating, I felt a little light headed. I'm sure it's a combination of energy going to my stomach to process the food and lack of energy to go around.

Shawn Dublin

11:20am IST Sunday 10 July 2005

We took a taxi with a Japanese staff guy. The taxi drivier charged us extra (15 euro vs 11) by not using the meter, excuses falling forth as I bitched at each one: claiming it was Sunday and the extra person and the fee to come pick us up. What a jerk.

12:27pm IST Sunday 10 July 2005

Standing on the main street with the spire.. The middle few lanes are under construction, but it's a Sunday so all the equipment is sleeping. Shawn is in the phone booth next to me as I'm enjoying the sun, standing on the crowded sidewalk.

I'm thankful for the inexpensive internet access. I downloaded a bunch of news stories about the London bombings that I may or may not find time to read on the boat. I have confirmed the liveliness of Bryn (and Noah) in China, though I have not heard back from Genki man Dan nor Bronwyn nor Paige, who doesn't live in London but happened to be there during the nightmare. She had just sent a happy email the day before sayig she got accepted in a business program at uni there.

for the record, I don't 100% know Paige, but she was on the 45th, 47th, and 48th Pb voyages, and I got her contact info at the 48th 49th handover meeting. She (at one point) planned to meet us in NYC, but I don't know if that has changed.

This morning we saw the Germans off the ship; they are headed back to their real lives in Germany.

again at Eddie Rockets

12:51pm IST Sunday 10 July 2005

Shawn and I are at Eddie Rockets cause he wanted greasy bad-for-us food and I can say HI to Miska who was our lovely waitress yesterday (and today). I sat in the same seat and everything. She remembered me and that I like water with no ice. I've got my cash laid out on the table cause it's the end of my Euros. 6 for the taxi back to the boat and 11.58 for the meal and tip.

My v key isn't working really well on my handspring visor keyboard. Shawn says I should just use y cause the look almost the same.

Funny quote from Shawn as he got out of the shower:

"And now, the old tedious job of puttin' on pants."

Shawn is hilarious!

3:33pm

I've decided to shave my head. Then I decided to shave two stripes from the front to the back, basically like a V on my head. It turned into something more like a mohawk in the middle with patches on either side of it. I did the two initial stripes and Shawn cleaned it up a lot.

Been getting good feedback from people on my hair. Audrey was like, "wow! holy shit dude!" nice. Keiko said it was scary. Everyone else has said it's cool. I like it.

gonarabe with Rie

5:55pm IST Sunday 10 July 2005

Played ごならべ with りえ。 It's similar to Pente: we have to get five same color stones lined up to win, but we are not allowed to capture stones nor place stones so that we have two "open threes," which are the primary two ways to win in Pente. I won four times and she won five times, which is *much* better than the first (most recent) time we played. I think simply because I was less tired this time.

Then we played Pente, and we won maybe an equal number of times (I think she won one more, but I didn't keep careful track).

hoax GET meeting

7:20pm IST Sunday 10 July 2005

GET Meeting was a fantastic hoax by Audrey! She brought us up to Sunshine Bar and bought us all beers! So cool!! I am surprised I didn't recognized she was up to something: Sandy (one of the bartenders) was standing behind her with a case of beers on the bar. I didn't have a beer, but enjoyed the stories everyone shared about Dublin. ps: I didn't drink a beer; the one allocated to me was passed around to various people who needed extra.

  1. Dave went to Belfast to find his family, but didn't have their contact information - just a vague memory of the neighborhood. He saw an old-ish guy helping a blind man on the bus. Then Dave recognized the old-ish guy was his uncle! After uncle Huey (*) helped the blind guy on the bus, Dave ran up to his uncle Huey to help *him* on the bus. "Here you go sir; I'll help you.." and Huey (of course) was all, "*I* don't need any help!! hey, it's Dave!!!!!" and whisked him off to a pub for a round of beer and the start of a huge family reunion.

  2. various people hooked up with various other people, and one person said, "I organized my own homestay." We all cheered, and the general question was posed: who has hooked up with a passenger? Three of the guys have (including me). None of the girls have, but a couple of close calls were reported.

  3. Carissa and Petra were at the beach, skipping rocks into the water because they didn't have swim wear, and the beaches were too crowded (with non-nude bathers) for them to just strip and dive in. So they decided to skip rocks into the water. Carissa was pretty crap at it, so they just had a rock throwing contest to see who could throw rocks the furthest. Petra won again at that game, so they tried to compete at the biggest splash contest. That fizzled into a game of just throwing pebbles into the ocean.

Carissa grabbed a pile of pebbles, took a good heave and her watch caught on her shirt then went flying with the pebbles. She took it in perfect stride, "and there goes my watch" and experienced bullet time as it gracefully tumbled and arced into the water with a fatal splash.

Three Hong Kong dollars well spent and well thrown.

  4. I most enjoyed Eddie Rocket's, the 50's style American cafe: big glass of water that Kin could hardly lift and I was like, "this is normal size!" Big huge vanilla shake with the tumbler so I could refill my glass three times - totally fantastic!

Greg got the punchline before I could: "so your favorite thing about Ireland was the American food."

  5. Petra claimed she had been chased by every 50 year old man with no teeth within 200 miles of Dublin.

She chose the guy with a stroke over the toothless guy.

  6. Katt was offered all sorts of information about stuff she didn't care about, including the history of symbolism of the shamrock.

(*) props to Shawn for remembering his name, and thanks to Katt for verifying the accuracy.

Let it be known that: (!) Sara (from HMV) was basically right: [WITH_TEETH] is not as good as the downward spiral: further down the spiral (though I have only listened to it one time so far (need to listen to it seven times to give it a fair shake, according to a guy from Telecheck who told me that about Marilyn Manson's Antichrist Superstar)), and (@) I already have this double album which I bought for 22 euros. Oh well. I hope Trent enjoys the phat cash.

Going to Sports Bar now to watch Katt drink Bailey's Irish Cream, which she said is non-alcoholic, trying to get me to try it. Silly girl.
