AAM

4:47am SGT Monday 09 January 2006

I went to sleep super early and have woken up naturally now.

But actually, we are in a new timezone, too:

3:49am ICT Monday 09 January 2006

Right now I am going to work on lesson plans for tomorrow.

6:14am ICT Monday 09 January 2006

I've just finished lessons preps for today, and really think I've got some good stuff that Matt would appreciate as being useful for life onboard and in port. Yesterday he talked to each teacher individually, and (for me, at least) said that if the students can't use the language immediately, then we shouldn't teach it.

Awake

6:16am ICT Monday 09 January 2006

I'm staying up; I plan to go to the gym now and run on the treadmill if one is available.

No treadmill was available; the ship was teeming with old people! Every machine in the gym was in use. A parade of people were walking around the top deck. A crowd of people were doing slow motion exercise on top of Yacht Club.

Fantastic Rabbits

9:39am ICT Monday 09 January 2006

I've just finished Fantastic Rabbits' second class today. Basically, we signed the class agreement and then everyone decided on one thing to teach about for 15 or 30 minutes. George seemed the most hesitant, but he will teach us about Rapa Nui. Kelly will give us a 30 minute tour of the ship. Alice will teach us about viruses. Michelle, who is now the governor-general of NZ, given that there is no NZ president, will teach about Cairns. Carol will teach about Japanese Archery.

Yay Fabulous Rabbits!

oops, Fantastic Rabbits!

Lunch

12:22pm ICT Monday 09 January 2006

Just at pork ribs lunch with Kellie, Lisa, Laura.. big fun with a huge moth parked by my head and the rain squall Kellie identified a couple minutes before it sent the people in back of the boat scurrying "like rats," said Kellie, and Lisa was mockingly, "they're people too, with names and families..." We joked about the amount of food we had stuck in our teeth; bones and corn and sauce on our faces. Too bad we were in public, or it woulda been really messy.

I thought about janette and food antics.

N Fighting Goats

3:53pm ICT Monday 09 January 2006

My N Class has named themselves Fighting Goats, because the name sorta sounds like 52 in English and Japanese. I love it cause it's so random!

Fighting Goats did really well today; they all presented pictures in front of class, and I gave them a mass of homework - basically talking to crew / staff and introducing friends, etc. And learn what TSS means.

I just ate a bit of a snack in Yacht Club for Tea Time, and have already gotten my shiznit ready for tomorrow's classes. Oh, and Carl asked if I have room for one more student. I was like, "if she's cool with coming to class at 8am!" She said it was cool. Her name is Tamami. I told her we have English names in class and she immediately said Angelina. I immediatelly saw the resemblence between Tamami and Ms Jolie.

About to go upstairs now and join the djambe (sp) circle.

Uh Oh

5:40pm ICT Monday 09 January 2006

Wow. We just got an urgent announcement given twice in Japanese.... something something something about Sri Lanka, and I was like, "what??" and then in English: we need to make an emergency stop to drop off a passenger in Sri Lanka.

Yikes stripes! I hope they will be a-okay.

Windows sucks

8:31pm ICT Monday 09 January 2006

Recently, since our network is a set of Microsoft Sucks Windows machines, I have collected some reasons that Microsoft Windows sucks.

I don't know that I can remember them all now, but here are a couple:

  1. I was creating hyperlinks to local files within a text document. For each new link, I had to navigate to the file I wanted to link starting from the directory which contained the file I was editing. That sucks a bit, but I solved it easily enough by moving the file to a more convenient directory and creating the hyperlinks while it was stored there.

I wondered if it would be so dumb as to create the links relative to the file, but the text that popped up when I hovered the mouse over the link showed a fully qualified location.

But it wasn't. When I moved the file back to where I wanted it, all the links were broken. But hovering over them still showed the same fully qualified location.

  2. There is a key labeled POWER on the keyboard. It's right next to SCROLL LOCK or something. If pressed, the computer shuts down without question. No pop-up window, "are you sure?" It just shuts down. A single keypress can derail a train of thought, close all chat windows, shut off the music. That's fucked up.

At least move the key to where it won't easily be hit.

cc performance

11:35pm ICT Monday 9 January 2006

The CCs did a funny cheer and maru-batsu interview thing in Broadway tonight. Good times! Yuki has the brightest smile of them all. And I really like her voice; it's cute and husky.

yuki and rei

12:31am ICT Tuesday 10 January 2006

Just came home after hanging out with Yuki and Rei across the hall. Carla was up on GET Street (they (probably via Carla) have started to call it Ghetto Street) planning lessons for tomorrow. The original plan was just to help Rei get photos from her camera to her computer, but she offered tea and cookies and a bit of chocolate, plus Yuki came home so we were all talking and when Yuki pulled out her nail polish, Rei painted my toe nails as well. Alternating blue and soft pink, with contrasting colors as polka dots or lines, and one smiley face. So cute!

I quite enjoy being closer friends with the CCs this time than last voyage.
