Entries this day: Dream Electric Foodage Lee_Hirsch Meeting Zora_youth_choir another_date zzzz Dream 6:24am EAT Friday 20 January 2006 Sitting in an audience, three performers did a funky walk onto the stage, though the first one came on and was doing some contact juggling with what looked like a wadded up ball of newsprint, but I later noticed it was full of buckshot, to give it some mass for him to work with. The other two guys came in together and were doing a little chant that sounded like the backup vocals in "The Lion Sleep Tonight," before the lead vocalist starts. The contact juggler guy was also doing some magic by making other balls appear in his contact-juggling right hand, while his left hand was behind his back, like a well-mannered butler. With the two balls, he made his hand look like a frog puppet (Kermit, without the mitt) with the two balls for eyes on the top/back of the guy's hand. A third ball appeared in the frog's mouth, and I was really impresed with this guy's contact juggling skills and set myself a task to remember to tell Fred about him because he would appreciate it. Then I began to wake up. permalinkElectric 6:58am EAT Friday 20 January 2006 I've been sitting for 34 minutes, writing about the conflict in my brain. My legs are going to shatter my brain with electricity when I stand up and the blood begins to go back inside. permalinkFoodage 9:54am EAT Friday 20 January 2006 Chowed breakfast with the girls across the hall and shared cameras to scope all the pics from our recent adventures. Rei taught me two new words, こむ and ひょう which mean "to arrange" and "graph" or "grid" or "leopard", respectively. I was trying to ask her if she wanted to go get the schedule and plan our respective days. よていひょう何とか何とか permalinkLee Hirsch 4:49pm EAT Friday 20 January 2006 Briefly met Lee Hirsch today, the director of Amandla!, a movie/documentary on the effect of music on the fall of Apartheid. We watched the film today in Broadway, and he's doing question and answer now, but I left when the questions seemed to veer into the realm of the not-so-interesting. Good questions that I can remember: Did HBO fund you well to get their logo on the front? ($100,000). How did you get involved with all this while in high school? (went to a school board finance meeting and wondered why they had assets in South Africa, couldn't argue that it was wrong because he didn't know enough about the situation.) Where else has music affected change? (The US, Okinawa, Hitler's campaign of nationalism, and more.) Why did your mom not want you to go to South Africa so soon after Apartheid ended? That's when I left. The movie is great, inspiring, and when I first watched it, made me want to be black. Or at least in solidarity with such a powerful movement. permalinkMeeting 8:31pm EAT Friday 20 January 2006 GET ME(eting) was aight; pretty fast... Shit is about to get hectic with GET Olympics on top deck and GET Charity Auction in Broadway, both on the 23rd. I massaged Carl's shoulders and back during the meeting even though he was sweaty from runnin' on the treadmill just prior to the meeting. Oh shit; I remember what else: Phil, for some reason, has come up with the genius idea of letting someone shave our chests for the charity auction. Damn. I've never considered shaving my chest before, but... it sounds like a good thing to try once. permalinkZora youth choir 10:41pm EAT Friday 20 January 2006 We've got a bunch of guests onboard right now. Lee Hirsch, Mikalah (sp) something, and two members of the Zora Youth Choir. Tonight was the Zora Youth Choir guys' first performance, so I went to check it out with Rei. It wasn't exactly the kind of music I like; it was definitely good, but also definitely acapella, and especially without percussion. 100% opposite from the Kenyan music we got from Peter's Band. permalinkanother date 11:11pm EAT Friday 20 January 2006 We've taken a long time to respond to the response from the girls across the hall. We sent them a request for information with some silly number questions and they sent a number back. Tonight I thought of the perfect response. We had been thinking of saying, "since your number is greater than negative 6 billion, we have decided to ask for another date." but we never ended up sending it, nor any response, until just a moment ago. A form letter like To the Lovely Ladies of ____________ After careful consideration of your response, ____________, we have decided to offer you an opportunity for a date on ______________. Sincerely, the young studs of 3027 I printed it, then wrinkled the paper and scanned it with scotch tape on the page and crooked on the scanner, etc. It has all kinds of little lines and copy splotches now, and then the numbers filled in: 3029, 1123, 1/24/06 11:15pm EAT Friday 20 January 2006 Heh heh. And Carla has just now said she's going down to bed, where she will find the note under her door. permalinkzzzz 3:13am EAT Saturday 21 January 2006 Stayed up probably too late tonight, but I enjoyed sitting with Rei in GET Room 8, helping her transcribe a movie about refugees in South Africa. I learned a bit about the problem, and what is/not being done about it. I also worked a little on trying to write a local perl script that will write a .shtml for a directory of images on my site. permalinkprev day next day |
