Today

11:52pm ART Saturday 25 February 2006

Today has been pretty productive, not counting a complete lack of preparation for classes. I studied / practiced Japanese for 2.5 hours with Akane, including writing addresses on the 6 postcards Hitomi so kindly made for me to send to Cheerful Dancing Fellows, drew two title images for the daily paper (so now all three that they have in their queue were drawn by me), filled in the sunrise and sunset times for the title image drawn by me with Maruan's help (playing DOTS in the background) that will be used tomorrow, had Saki do some accupuncture on me, gave her a massage (and she asked if I have actually studied massage), missed the GET Meeting (that I thought was canceled because we met earlier today), ate dinner with Erika, determined that my computer doesn't have the motion detection hardware, and probably a couple other things.

Now it's showertime and bedtime.

Valparaiso, Chile

Valparaiso, Chile

Greetings from Valparaiso!

During this voyage, as opposed to the northern hemisphere one (May - Aug 2005), I
have done very little planning before each port. On that voyage, I pretty much had
a decent idea of what each port was like, or a bit about its history, or some
such.. but this voyage I have just gotten off the ship with a plan to wander
around.

It's generally worked pretty well, and has worked well again today. I tagged along
with some students de Pepe y Isabel's clases de espanol; we took a train to Vina
del Mar, and then a bus further north along the coast to a seafood restaurant that
was completely drenched in all things nautical, focusing on the fishing industry.
Wooden carvings of fish augmented the nets, bouys, compasses, barometers, ropes,
bottles, cages, and countless things I couldn't even name even if I could remember
what they were!

The orange juice was freshly squeezed and full of pulp. The fish fell off the
bones in delicious chunks. The semi-minced shrimp with mayonnaise dressing was...
interesting.

Right now I'm in the port terminal, uploading pictures taken between Capetown and
Ushuaia. If you want to check them out, visit this URL:

under the big images if you want to read about the pictures.

After Valparaiso

1:45pm ART Saturday 25 February 2006

The ship is pretty rocky today. I'm enjoying it.

Today is our day off after Valparaiso. Tomorrow the third term of classes will begin. I'm on the late shift of classes, and have a shload of Afternoon GET to do.

I have a bit of a concern that I may miss something that I'm supposed to do, but for now, everything is a-okay. Not really enough time to take a big phat nap like I'd like to do, but I'll mindfully write a to-do list and see what happens.

Things to do "today"

  1. * write to Natalie saying that I'm officially interested in being on the 54th voyage, and pre-departure GET.

  2. give my note to Natalie to Matt

  3. write to Paige to say HI

  4. call Kiichi to coordinate a meeting time

  5. * interview Phil about what to do in Rapa Nui

  6. * Japanese lesson with Akane

  7. transcribe Japanese journal entries

  8. * write a reminder about Speech Contest info meeting tomorrow

  9. * contact Saki about English / energy-work exchange

  10. try AMS2HID on Carl's computer (*)

  11. (*) Fred showed me a cool thing called AMS2HID, which converts physical orientation information into mouse movements in different applications. The coolest application that uses this is a ball rolling app, so the ball appears to roll according to which way the computer is tilted.

I just spent maybe 45 minutes cleaning up the chat with Fred so it could be archived below. I hope I appreciate this later. Or at least I hope someone else appreciates it.

Chat with Fred

1:59pm ART Saturday 25 February 2006

From yesterday, my first long gmail-chat with Fred:

Fred: yoyoyoy
become unidle
then check out this link:
me: yo
Fred: this guy is tilting his powerbook as input to the game, which is a 'marble madness' thing, where the floor tilts to make the ball move
whassap!!!!
me: holy shit!
It's downloading now
Fred: yeah!
me: probably
Fred: i have it on my machine now too!
me: FUCK!
how can the machine detect tilts???
Fred: it's got a motion sensor inside, which is how it knows to park the harddrive heads when you drop it
me: the new ones do
Mine doesn't
Fred: urs too
me: shit; I didn't know they knew the direction of tiltage
mine does??????
Fred: yeah
prolly
me: the heads don't stop far as I know
Fred: it's not new technology
me: my shit is 4 years old now
haha
Fred: just download the links i send you
and see if it works
me: k
send em
Fred: i'll send em tonite or something
me: I have basically 20 minutes left before I have to jet
Fred: figured
i'll line it all out, bim bim bim.
so how're things???!
me: stuff is pretty cool
um sorry distracted
Fred: 's coo
that's why ur there, eh?
me: Uh, we are in Valparaiso Chile now
This voyage has been more relaxed for me
Fred: get u some coffee?
me: I haven't been like OH MY GOD about everything
Fred: hahahaha
me: and I didnt get coffee, even though I'm in South America
Yeah yeah now we're in CapeTown.
Yeah now Namibia
it's pretty weird.  really.
Fred: and next voyage, you'll be all, no no, go down to this place, and you'll find where the locals go
me: I'm just living on this cruise ship and, like an elevator, we end up in different places, and I get off and walk around.
zactly
Fred: hahaha
elevator!
the elevator of rob's life
me: I was pretty pleased with that analogy.
Fred: make sure the doors stay open while you're out!
or like dr. who's phone booth, traveling all over space and time
but most people won't know who dr. who is, i guess
so what have you done lately?
me: ummmm
today?
Fred: sure
me: I have just written a Rob Update and sent it, for one thing
Fred: i see it
but what else
me: I'll forward you an email that is much mo' longer about the trip in general.  it's written to a teacher from previous voyage
I have been trying not to chase girls all around the ship
Fred: k
haha
same
except for the ship part
me: I have been trying not to work too much onthe ship, but still get the shit done I need to
Fred: yeah
me:  hey do you have links to the game?
Fred: yeah
me: I have Hitomi's camera
me: pretty nice one with 7.2 Megapix
Fred: that's the ball game.
i don't like its setup; the camera moves with respect to the board (it follows the balls motion, always "behind" the ball)
and so your tilt direction becomes outdated.
me: I'm downloading the .dmg file now
Fred: like, if you tilt back, so the ball rolls toward you, the camera will swing around, and then the ball will be rolling uphill, because you're tilting back
and so the ball will go back and forth
you'll see.
this is the "apple motion sensor" 2 "human interface device" program
run neverball first,
then runn ams2hid
select neverball in the ams2hid application window
me: Um, so the camera got sandy, somehow...  may have had to do with me SANDBOARDING down these fucking tall tall tall ass steep sand dunes in Namibia on my belly on masonite sheets!!!!!!!!!!!   I was recording the ride on video, fucking holding the camera with one hand and holding the board up with the other
Fred: set the Hz to like 360, not 60
oh, and here are two other apps to check to see if ams2hid will work at all
also, in ams2hid, switch from "normal mode" to "test mode" when trying stuff for the first time.
cause ams2hid steals the mouse/keyboard, and if something goes wrong, you have no mouse/keyboard
but test mode will stop after a time
me: So I took it apart, trying to get any sand out.   A bit tedious, but I was able to get it all together again.  There are some pics in the ones I referenced today in my recent mass email.
Fred: (so does normal mode, though, cause it's nagware or something.)
me: And in other news we met Lee Hirsch, the director of Amandla! a movie that made me want to be black.  You should prolly check it out if you want to get back to your black roots.
forget prev AMSVISUALIZER link
hahahaha
ok!
AMSTracker is command-line
AMSVisualizer shows the orientation of your powerbook
StableWindow rotates a window to stay horizontal
totally awesome about the sand dunes
i wanna see the vids
have you heard from dude recently?
me: Lee is a cool cat, super busy, but at times we were able to just chill out and chat
Fred: he's got news that i won't spoil for him
i know them kinda ppl
me: haven't really heard from Dude, but I heard about Gabi, baby number 2
Fred: that's one of the two things
me: ain't heard other news
Fred: also cool, though not the other thing, is that his car has an lcd, and he had this gmail up on it
i think it was his laptop plugged in to the car's lcd
me: I've got to escape, relatively pronto..
wow
lcd?
Fred: yeah
check ur gmail, which i forwarded to you
me: that's pretty sweet
Fred: a couple days ago
well, good talking to you
i have a new phone now, been trying to figure out a way to text you from it
me: Oh shit!
that pic makes me laugh!!!!!
Fred: but ur phone is probably out of service on the ocean
yeah
me: definitely no service on my phone
I might not have service even when I get back; out of money
Fred: and texts to an email address are considered emails and cost extra
truu
me: but it ain't a big thing
aight I gots to jam
Fred: not really
coo
me: love you lots and htnaks for the links
Fred: see you lates
np
me: What's yer phone number?
Fred: love you too
555-555-5555

me: cool peace!
