Dream

9:20am JST Tuesday 11 April 2006 (day 13166)

Riding TJ Bike to some GET party or event or something, but didn't have clear directions on how to get there. Amanda (Goodie) was leading me for a bit, riding through some woods, generally around a lake, and then she was like, "turn left up ahead; you'll know where." and I thought "aight" then was worried and she said, "no, really, you will know where."

And soon enough I came across a STAR WARS convention, and knew that must be the place, given that one of the main reasons we met was through Charyl, a lover of all things S W. I turned toward the source of Darth Vader suits and Leah outfits, and cars made into various space ships to a police protected barricaded street where some guy was talking to a cop, asking about his legal rights to video tape the parade, then show it later to his friends. The cop was saying basically, "don't ask; just do it," and I crossed the street by tossing TJ Bike over one of the rails (there was a gap available on one side, but not the opposite) and then down into a ditch to get away from the throngs of Chewies and C3P0s.

The kid finished his recording and wanted to use my computer to do the editing, so I let him, but then there was some conflict because he wanted it for a long time and wouldn't let me (nor anyone) watch what he was doing, so I was like, "fine; you can't use my computer," and, knowing it was a dream, I mentally erased his data from my HD and erased him from my dream altogether.

That reminds me I had another dream-awareness moment earlier in the night, but don't remember the deets.

Drizzly

9:31am JST Tuesday 11 April 2006 (day 13166)

It's a rizzly drizzly day today, and I don't really want to go out into it. But watching the weather last night I think it's going to continue for a while. Super glad I got here before it started. But I "have to" be somewhere, so I'm wondering about buying a rain slicker and snagging some garbage bags to cover my bags and getting the flock outta here.

Part of my anxiety is that I don't have a feeling that I'm really helpful here; I can't say that I feel unwelcome, but a part of me worries that I'm welcome only through Japanese tatemae (sp).

I'm going to go try asking again if I can use the internet.

9:47am

I didn't ask: the door to that room is closed (first time I've seen it closed), and I don't see Masako, the apparent leader of the house.

Today

Checked email today, and was able to get a Rob Update sent. I think I'm going to meditate now. Soon, at least. Okay, sometime today.

Version 0.1 now complete; it includes documentation!!

5:49pm JST Tuesday 11 April 2006

Version 0.2 now complete. Thanks to the fact that Perl rules, the planned change was easy. (handling various working directory locations)

7:53am JST Wednesday 12 April 2006

Version 0.21 includes some better comments and variable name updates, to make the code more legible.

I noticed there's a bit more robnugen.com-specific code that's not easily cut out by deleting entire lines, but I doubt that anyone (especially who can't cut it out themselves) will actually really want this code, so I'm not going to even bother making it easy to cut out.

Please note: I have turned angle brackets into < and > in this .html file with the hopes that they will show up in the form below in a way that can just be cut-n-pasted to your local text editor.

showers and no showers

showers and no showers

Hello from Shima-shi!

TJ Bike and I have ridden about 4 or 500 kilometers (by rough estimate) basically
west by southwest of Tokyo. We slept outside each night, and one of those nights I
slept in my tent.  Two nights and one full day I spent under a bridge due to rain;
thankfully I had been warned about the impending shower by some people I talked to
the previous day!

The other nights were spent next to a rest stop, in a park, and next to a field,
respectively. No tent, but definitely sleeping bag; it's been cold!!

For that 6-day stretch, I had no shower, and my food intake was a bit sketchy.
After finishing the Power Bars donated by Carl, (and peanuts donated by Jesse,) I
ate granola cereal most of the time. I worked it out at about 100 kilocalories for
100 yen. I ate at McDonald's several times (cheap with free electricity for
journaling on my computer).

At one point, I was able to get free internet access at a small school to teach
people how to use PCs.

The past 2 nights I have been at Koji's house; he was one of my students in the
class called Fantastic Rabbits on the recent PB voyage. I'm really thankful for
his (and Masako's) hospitality!

I have basically recovered now, but my legs were certainly sore upon arrival. My
first thoughts when asked, "how was it?" were something like, I won't be
considering riding around the world anytime soon, but I just said, "longer than I
expected."

Greeted by Koji, his wife, and then surprisingly, by a native English speaker!! I
wondered if they had a previously unmentioned daughter, but it turns out she was
WWOOFing on their farm for a few days during her visit to Japan.

Anne is from Maine, and this summer will be living on a farm with no running water,
no electricity, and _no internet_. The nearest town is 2 hours away. I hope it's
a great experience!

For the past two days, it has been rainy; I'm thankful to have arrived before the
drizzly cold weather started. Soon I hope to be back on TJ Bike, headed toward
Kyoto (where Tomoko and Sumidasan said they would meet me for dinner!), though I
haven't worked out a schedule for that. I'd like to help out on Koji's farm as
well; hopefully the rain stops in time for everything to happen in dry weather!

I took a few pictures, but right now have no way to get them online. They've only
got dial-up access here.

Thank you for encouraging emails!

   I hope everyone is well.
     - Rob!
