Entries this day: Around_town_with_Jesse Computer_cleaning Drinking_problem Maku_BB Recovering_HDD dinner_with_Hitomi home nope ubuntu Around town with Jesse 12:42pm JST Friday 14 July 2006 Been talking to Jesse about how we can make money, and the conversation will continue as I accompany him to do a couple of errands. I started the conversation basically like, "hey Jesse; I still ain't got no job; we've either got to make your business idea work, or I gots to get out of Japan." 2:26pm JST Friday 14 July 2006 hahah we missed the transfer station on Inokashira line because, though it's a station "big" enough for all the Inokashira trains to stop, it's a tiny station compared to what we're used to. permalinkComputer cleaning 3:11pm JST Friday 14 July 2006 Cleaning up my files and crap from Hitomi's computer, as it will be going back to her quite soon. Got several pictures and movies that I may put online, and lots of crap that I've just deleted. permalinkDrinking problem 3:32pm JST Friday 14 July 2006 Jesse and I split a 1000ml carton of juice; he poured his half into a bottle and I was drinking from the carton, though using a straw. Finishing the last of the beverage, I sucked on the straw, but tilted the carton back as if to knock back the last chug, which then poured onto my shirt. hahahaha! idiot. permalinkMaku BB 5:01pm JST Friday 14 July 2006 Yahoo!BB has access points scattered in various businesses around Tokyo. Looking into prices for access, but it appears they don't have an account just for the wireless; gotta also get an ADSL account at home, or a NTT cellphone account. permalinkRecovering HDD 6:33pm JST Friday 14 July 2006 With Hitomi at her friend's work where he is trying to revive my old computer's HDD after it died when Hitomi and I tried to copy its data to her computer. 7:28pm Welp, he wasn't able to fix it, but he said it seemed to work with an IDE->USB adapter with power, but his computer couldn't read the volume; just see the drive existed. Perhaps buying a $30 adapter with AC (not enough power just with USB to make it work) will bring the drive and data back to life! permalinkdinner with Hitomi 11:31pm JST Friday 14 July 2006 To ビックカメラ in 渋谷, but they didn't have the drive adapter. Headed to 新宿のヨドバシカメラ, and found just what we needed. Wandered a little bit until we found an Italian restaurant where we enjoyed avacado/cheese/chicken goop in avacado shell, and thin (super thin, like corn chips) thin cheese pizza. I didn't really care for the salad (too vinegary) nor the smoking (too smokey) so we ducked out quickly, but not before I used the 1/6th crispy pizza slice as a new nose (props to Supa-funny Shawn on 49th for that idea) and nearly licked the avacado skin clean. Back to the part of Shinjuku that I know in search of ice cream, but by that point the shops were closed or fast-closing as 10pm rolled by. As in, we walked out of the mall area as the guards were locking the doors. Found a soft cream (soft serve ice cream) shop down the steps near GAP and ... it was okay, but not particularly vanillafied. McDonald's 100 yen shake would have been better. 仁美 suggested we wander around, so I led her to where I thought I had stayed my first night in Japan: the Sun Route Hotel in Shinjuku. Instead of the hotel, a construction project filled the lot. "The hotel is gone???" Not likely that it wasn't getting enough business, being in such a fantastically crowded and wealthy city... I told Hitomi why I had dragged her that direction, and she promptly pointed to the sign describing the construction. Ah. ホテルソンロウト (Hotel Sun Route), being rebuilt on this site. Very glad to know my sense of direction had led me well. - - - - Told her the story of losing my keys on my first day alone in the city, and buying 10 tickets (hoping for a discount) when I could only use 1, and how frightfully confusing Shinjuku is to a newbie, especially an illiterate one. But now.. man I got this Tokyo shit figured out (*)... I even bought Hitomi her first Suica (which translates to water melon, but is the brand name for a cash card that works on JR lines). (*) not figured out Took the train to Shibuya where I hopped off, and she stayed on (til Shinagawa, then Kawasaki, then home). - - - - Walking through Shibuya when the creatures of the night have fully taken over, I felt both なつかし and a sense that this will be one of my last times to see it. Am I heading home soon? permalinkhome 11:53pm JST Friday 14 July 2006 Headed home to Jesse's where I crossed paths with him and Anna (and the rest of the bible study crew) on their way home (Jesse escorting to the station) and thought I should perhaps walk with them just a second after it was "too late," so I didn't turn around and join them. Got home and the door is locked. And I don't have the key. permalinknope 12:22am JST Saturday 15 July 2006 Hard drive recovery did not work. Sigh. 1:05am I'm not sure what else to try; Jesse is trying gentle taps and shakes of the drive while it's on. Not working. He says "that's really weird," which I guess means he thinks it should be working. 2:35am nothing permalinkubuntu 3:35am JST Saturday 15 July 2006 I swapped the new card back to the new HDD and it works just fine. Created a new partition on it called "rob user space" and made a backup of the junk I have here in my user space on Hitomi's HDD. Then tried to install ubuntu on the rest of the drive, but was unable to make it happen. Probably cause I haven't read any instructions for how to do the partitioning of the drive, and I wasn't willing to just let ubuntu do it alone. If it were to wipe Hitomi's data on her drive here, that would be a super nightmare. permalinkprev day next day |
