Colleenie Beanie!!

2:19pm JST Tuesday 1 August 2006

Just had a multiple hour fantastic chat with Colleenie Beanie!!! But not only chat; it was video chat; my first one!!

When we got the video part connected, I nearly started to cry like oh my god I miss you so much!!!

She didn't have a mic, so I could talk and she had to type or gesture.

I showed her Francois and she showed me Fiver and told stories of SWUUSI and who's getting/gotten married and it was totally totally great great great!

At the end, we had to do a 1..2..3.. hang up because neither of us wanted to. She has to sleep, and I need to eat and think about going to work.

Fred reports that he's been unable to get the DVD data extracted; not enough storage space on some machines, too much wonkiness on others.

Hahahahaha Still super entertained by this Marble Blast level. It's a TOTAL ripoff of one that Alex Swanson made, but I just tweaked a couple points to make it far more entertaining...

Train is late

5:41pm JST Tuesday 1 August 2006

Shit.

Trains in Tokyo are almost never late. Usually exactly on time. This train is late. When I arrived, it was about 30 seconds late, but now it is over 8 minutes late. It's getting into 17:47 timeframe, which is when the latest train I can take to still get to Shibuya on time.

5:44pm JST

A guy just came up, "hey man, how's your Japanese?"

"Totally shit man, I have no idea what the deal is. But people are escaping, so it looks bad."

at the same time he was like, "people are bailing; I'm outta here, too."

At 6pm, a new flood of people left after a certain announcement. Chaos near the ticket gates as people crowded to get their money back. I knew I couldn't waste time doing that; I can explain later why my ticket thinks I'm still in the system.

Blew through the gates and ran upstairs (as a cop was coming down the stairs!) and outside. Fortunately not crowded; I had been worried cause there was a huge crowd in the station around the gates. Wish I had had my camera!!

I saw the guy who had asked me if I knew what was up. Told him about the cops; we agreed some bad shit had happened.

Perhaps just a suicide, but there was no suicide at this station.... why cops?

Taxi taxi taxi... hmmmm.. ah. motorcycle!

AW YEAH!

Holy shizah that was ubersuper fantastic! At 6pm, which was after the time I expected to be in Shibuya, and tons of people were escaping the station, I zipped out, busted through the gates (hordes were crowding the ticket guy to get refunds) and saw a motorcycle guy.

[can you go to Shibuya? I will give you 1000 yen.]

He said no at first, and I took off walking, looking for the next option.

Then he came up. [1000 yen?]

Yeah. I handed it over and we were off. ZOOOOOOoooooOOOOooooOOOOooooooomm!! through traffic stop start stop start zoooooooOOOoOOOoOOooooOOOoooooooooooom!!! stop start weave swerve zoooooooooooooooooooooo

It was great!!!!

Got here just in time. Like walked in and walked into the classroom "ready" to go.

Totally wish I coulda gotten a picture of that.

Reiko said my student (Mariko) had been totally chill with rescheduling if necessary, and she knew what kinda chaos was going on. Reiko said Mariko said people were totally amok, though we still don't know what happened.

My student now is late; I wonder if it's part of the same deal. (still???)

jumper in Yoga

10:55pm JST Tuesday 1 August 2006

Home now. Michael looked up online what happened.

There was a suicide in Yoga station, one station away from mine. According to the news report, s/he jumped right around 5:30, which is about 1.5 minutes before the Express train should have been passing through my station.

So, my train was waiting to be passed by the Express train. But someone jumped in front of that Express. Disrupting probably tens of thousands of would-be passengers, and therefore costing the train company 10,000 * 120 yen = US $12,000.00 (*) in returned fares, plus clean up, etc.

But,

Guess how the train company will recover the money?

Insurance?

No.

The family of the deceased is left with the bill.

(*) I bet this is way way way too low of an estimate.

ninja chat

2:14am JST Wednesday 2 August 2006

Got to chat a bit with Hannah Banana from Memphis! I met her when I visited my friend Lisa on my first solo-road trip around some of the eastern US states. Mostly we just said HI and she asked questions about Tokyo and how much Japanese I know. not much. Well, more than that; I think I don't give myself enough credit, but when I hear people who have actually studied.. wow.

Good to see Hannah is happy!
