Backup status

9:27am JST Monday 19 March 2007 (day 13508)

Good morning, backup. I see now there is still 4116 MB of music to be archived to Amazon S3.

Apparently due to all the data OS X stores about files, this number is greater than the actual amount of data to be stored. In the Pending Operations list, I see this for each song:

Write /path/title.mp3 (0 KB)
Write /path/._title.mp3 (0 KB)
Write /path/._title.mp3 (0 KB)
Write /path/title.mp3 (3 MB)
Delete /path/._title.mp3 (0 KB)
Copy /path/NN title.mp3 (3 MB)
Delete /path/title.mp3 (0 KB)

Where NN is the song number within the album. Only the 4th Write command seems to take any (much) time. Even the Copy (though it lists the same amount of data) doesn't take (much) more time than the 0 KB operations.

Anyway, it's now 9:40am and we're at 4045 MB remain, which means roughly 5.5 MB / minute or 740 minutes (12 hours) remain

So it should be done before I get back from work tonight.

9:46am JST

4008 MB remain. 6.2 MB / minute

I've just turned off BOINC, to see if it makes any difference. I imagine not, since it's CPU intensive while the backup is bandwidth intensive.

9:55am JST

3954 MB. 6 MB / minute. No real difference.

10:55am JST

3553 MB. 6.7 MB / minute.

10:57am JST Monday 19 March 2007 (day 13508)

3539 MB. Now turning BOINC back on.

12:49pm JST

2880 MB: 5.9 MB / minute.

So maybe BOINC does have some effect on the thing.

1:43pm JST Monday 19 March 2007 (day 13508)

2461 MB remain. I'm going to pull the ethernet cable, take my computer to work, come back and plug it back in. This should effectively simulate a network outage. We'll see how JungleDisk handles it.

2:02pm JST Monday 19 March 2007 (day 13508)

Hmmm. While writing the next entry, JungleDisk seems to be trying and then discarding write operations. That ain't what I had hoped would happen.

New PasMo

2:01pm JST Monday 19 March 2007 (day 13508)

Got my teiki converted into a PasMo, though the only bad thing is that I didn't get a picture of my old teiki for posterity.

Work

3:11pm JST Monday 19 March 2007 (day 13508)

"I'm going to Los Angeles the day after tomorrow, so I have some questions."

"I've never lived in Los Angeles, but okay."

"What's the weather like in Los Angeles?"

"Um, if I were you, I'd look it up on the internet, because I don't really have any idea."

"Oh, I did that, and it said 20 degrees C."

"Oh, well, then, it's 20 degrees C."

"What should I wear?"

"When is it 20 degrees C in Tokyo?"

"April."

"What do you wear in April in Tokyo?"

"Blouse, skirt, stockings, shoes."

"Heels or flats?"

"Flats."

What kind of teaching is this? WTF is going on here? Am I an ass for not appreciating the chance to answer her questions?

10:58pm JST Monday 19 March 2007 (day 13508)

Reiko told me one of her favorite students saw me as not in the best spirits today during our lesson. I agreed and surmised that it was because of the previous student who had sucked my brains out by trying to read through a book that (in my judgement) is way above her level.

It didn't quite come out like that, I bitched about my job and how I'm sick of pandering to students who won't do any homework, who come in and be all like, "how do I study English?" but don't do homework, or who act all like I should have some sort of magic pill that can magically make them speak English or some shite like that. It doesn't fucking exist, people. Go home and study. Go watch movies in English. Go meet some English speakers. Use the resources around you; change your lifestyle.

I ranted on to say that I'm not willing to study, so that's why I've quit taking Japanese lessons; it's fucking embarrassing to me if I come in all, "yeah, I didn't study again."

What a nightmare.
