AM storm

6:24am CDT Friday 20 July 2007 (day 13632)

Apparently, it's been raining every day for about a month, which actually is pretty unusual for this time of year in Houston. I just got woken up by a rather strikingly loud thunder strike, and.. man, I wish Ami were here to see this. It's not the hardest rain I've ever seen, but *this* is rain.

This normal summer storm (only abnormal in the recent frequency, not intensity) is raining harder and producing more lightning than *any* storm I've seen in 4.25 years in Tokyo. This is why I have no respect for what Japanese call "rain" in Tokyo as I walk around without my umbrella, assuring them, "no, actually, it's *not* raining."

All my stuff

6:34am CDT Friday 20 July 2007 (day 13632)

In addition to my first marble track, Maggie has been keeping boxes and boxes of my stuff, including all my handwritten diaries, my coin collection, my file cabinet (one box worth), several books and CDs, high school and university yearbooks, papers from second grade, and scrapbooks, including the skeleton of Rob's Roller coaster Roundup of the world's great coasters.

Most of these boxes say they were sealed in July 2002, so I surmise Maggie has basically had them since then.

Dang. Five years.

Chat with Maggie

9:49am CDT Friday 20 July 2007 (day 13632)

Lovely chatting with Maggie this morning over muffins and then the dogs. She told me stories from New Orleans: more problems from the people than the hurricane, and I talked a bit about the Zeitgeist movie.

Really comfortable being back home.

Digging through stuff

12:10pm CDT Friday 20 July 2007 (day 13632)

I just tossed a lot of the crizzle that was in my fizzle bizzle. Took some pizzles too.

And I want to transcribe some of the writings I did during freshman composition in college. I found myself laughing at one of them, and the others seem equally interesting; my writing now hasn't really improved since then! (eek?)

Dogs

12:22pm CDT Friday 20 July 2007 (day 13632)

from: Rob Nugen
to: Maggie

I was like, "okay guys, you ready to get in your kennel? ready to get in your kennel?" and they
were like, "no," as Ivan scampered around the house.

And then I was like, "aight; I don't have time to try to coerce you in. I'll go get a treat."

When I closed the package and turned around, the dogs were gone. What? I thought they like treats!

You know where they went. (*)

When I found them, I was like, ahahahahahahahaaa!!!

(*) Maggie knows where they went. Both were obediently in their kennels!

Talking to Ma on Skype

8:45pm CDT Friday 20 July 2007 (day 13632)

Talking to my mom on Skype:

Ma talking to me on Skype

I have discovered a technique to determine if I am still jet lagged.

  1. secretly fly to a new timezone

  2. call someone in the same timezone

  3. pretend to still be in the old timezone

If step three proves difficult, I could probably say I've gotten settled into the new timezone.

- - - -

Talking to Ma was great! I found step three above quite difficult; I very nearly described 12 hours from now as morning, when from my official point of view it's evening.

Jon took the picture of her while she was talking to me, so it's like a primitive (?) form of a web cam.

The best news: I know when she's leaving for SWUUSI.

I'll be able to show up at her house late tomorrow night, after playing with Dude and Veronica (and Cristina and Gabi) all day, and still be in plenty of time for SWUUSI!

I just hope they have a seat for me... eeek!

Well, it will be fine. Certainly a seat will be available from someone at her church; she's giving the sermon on Sunday morning, so I'm sure it will be fine.

At one point, Ma was like, "are you going to come visit anytime soon?" and I was like, "well, the soonest would be summer, or *perhaps* this winter."

She wanted to verify: "do you mean this summer, or next summer?"

"Next summer; next summer."

this summer; this summer.

Zeitgeist movie with Dude

2:05am CDT Saturday 21 July 2007 (day 13633)

Just watched Zeitgeist with Dude; it took 4 hours with all the commentary and checking done on various facts cited in the movie. I believe he called it very right wing libertarian. He agreed with lots of the statements, but not all of the subsequent conclusions drawn from those.
