Ami headed out

7:34am CDT Tuesday 7 August 2007 (day 13650)

Ami's got to go today. I'm sad to see her go, but definitely want to be on time to the airport.

written 10:47am JST Saturday 8 September 2007 (day 13681)

I remember being really (really) anxious about the time, and hollering at Fred to get up and such. He was right; we ended up being there way ahead of time. Got Ami checked in, and even had time to go for breakfast after that. We drove out of the airport and skipped many fast food places, but then both agreed The Kettle would be just about perfect.

Ami and I were set on getting salad bar, but Fred was torn between that and french toast. He ended up getting salad bar, and lo, french toast was available on the bar. I imagine the waitress would have mentioned this detail had he tried to order both, but.

All the salad items were under plates, giving me the sense that the pickins were slim, but turns out they were just a bit tricky to scoop. One hand for tray, one hand to uncover the food, one hand to scoop. Zaphod, go get me a salad.

We ate nearly our fill, and joked about telling the waitress, "we'll be right back, we've just gotta go drop her off at the airport."

Fred made a comment that she would probably let us, but I have my doubts.

We got to the airport and found her flight had been delayed (her Northwest Airlines flight was delayed both directions (one international flight, and one domestic)), so we chilled in the main airport area until she needed to cross that waterproof zone for ticketed passengers. I wished we had been able to know this while at breakfast! The wait would have been happier and more delicious there, I imagine.

Fred still sleepin'

7:46am CDT Tuesday 7 August 2007 (day 13650)

I've realized something: I am hesitant to wake Fred up because I don't want to hear him complain about whatever, but I don't want him to make us late leaving for the airport. I informed him of the leaving time last night, I woke him up slightly at 7:23, then again at 7:40.

It's like fuckin' hell, what's the optimal time? He never asked, "wake me up at __:__," which I'd be glad to do.

Fred is growing up to be a grouchy pissy old fart, and I don't like it.

8:04am CDT

But: on time departure. Fred got up and it's all good. He's still not talkative, though.

12:23pm CDT

For the record, Fred's all good now that he woked up.

How to delete using Terminal on Mac

3:59pm CDT Tuesday 7 August 2007 (day 13650)

I just spent several minutes writing how to use rm to delete a file or directory on OS X with Terminal. These directions are freeware, and come with no warranty.

Open Finder --> Applications --> Utilities --> Terminal

Hit return a few times.

Each time you hit return, you should see a new line appearing on the screen, with a little box or line at the right hand end.

Hitting return a few times is not necessary to delete anything, but it will show you what I mean by "the command line prompt."
That's the name of the line that appears each time you hit Return. The computer is waiting for you to tell it what to do.
When you hit return, the computer does whatever is on the line.

In this case, that's nothing, so the computer quickly does nothing and then waits for the next command.

Each time you want to talk to the computer through Terminal, you do it by typing things on the command line and hitting return.

In this email, I'm representing the command line with $

There are some hundred commands that can be done on the command line, but we're going to focus on the semi-dangerous command rm.

I say it's dangerous because anything that is removed with rm DOES NOT COME BACK. No recycle bin, no "oops" command, nothing.
It's gone gone gone.

(1) HOW TO DELETE A FILE

If you want to delete a file (not a directory), simply type

$ rm

with a space after it. Then drag from Finder to the Terminal window the file you want to delete. This will write the full
path of the file to terminal so you don't have to.

The result will look something like

$ rm /Users/Sue/Movies/dumb_and_dumber/dumb.mov

If you are sure you dragged the correct icon to the terminal, then hit return and the file should be deleted. If you get no
response, then it's gone. If you get a Y/N prompt, then hit Y and return and it should be deleted. If you get an error, then
the problem is out of the scope of this email.

(look for the command chmod online for likely ways to solve it)

(2) HOW TO DELETE A DIRECTORY (folder)

If you want to delete a directory, add an -r after rm:

$ rm -r /Users/Sue/Documents/I_want_to_delete_this_directory/

Then to close the terminal, type

$ exit

and hit return.

Alt-Q to remove the window if it doesn't go away.

Happy deleting!

Just remember, like in The Matrix, there is no undo.

HI Jennifer

http://robnugen.com/images/travel/US/Texas/2007/summer/rob_and_spot_reunion/

Just want to thank you again for taking care of Spot, taking us *to*
Spot, and putting up with two of me at the same time in your living
room.

It was great to see you; I hope you're doing wonderfully.

   Love Love
     - Rob!

The love that you give is the pain that you release.

("two of me" refers to Fred and I together verbally debating her life choices)

You are so funny.

I am glad that I got to see you while you were here. I can't believe that
it had been so long. It seems like everything has changed and yet nothing
has. I am glad that you made it back safely and I hope that everything
works out for the very best in your new career choice.

Welcome to CiCi's

1:39am CDT Wednesday 8 August 2007 (day 13651)

We went back to support the pizza industry because Jeremy had given us free seating the day before. This time he charged us for yesterday. Dammit! But still good pizza.

bourne ultimatum

1:39am CDT Wednesday 8 August 2007 (day 13651)

Fred and I watched Bourne Ultimatum for $7.50 *total* at the hella cheap theater in Tomball. Only about eight people in the audience besides us. Good movie. Fred thought some of the fight/chase sequences were too long, but I liked them fine. I'm glad about Julia Stiles' character's smile in the end. I like her (character, don't know about the actress).
