Entries this day: AM_Lumpiness Can_I_remember_my_dream Work free_hugs xkcd AM Lumpiness 8:27am JST Monday 19 November 2007 (day 13753) Could not get out of bed today; I despise cold weather. Even though the heater is on, and the room is, strictly speaking, warmer than without the heater, it's also breezy, and basically feels cold. I have it set on 23 degrees C; I guess I could bump it up a few more degrees, but I can't bear to use that much electricity. All bills are paid in this room, which is nice, but ultimately earth is paying for it out of her flesh and oil. I don't want to take more than I really need. I realized that I could do my morning meditation without getting out of my sleeping bag, so I did that and then flopped around like a lump half sleeping and half not getting up. I rationalized that I don't need a shower because I took one after ultimate last night, so I flopped around during when I normally take a shower, and finally when I was like, "hmmmm; I'm also hungry," and remembered I have granola available! Whoohooo! I got up to get down to grab and chow a bowl of granola. permalinkCan I remember my dream 8:38am JST Monday 19 November 2007 (day 13753) The only bad thing about flopping around is losing contact with my dream memories Taking a test, like some sort of essay exam with Colleen, and given by my mom. I don't remember the question, but my answer was in the form of a restaurant review by some famous French restaurant critic: I could taste the residual oil from the process used to extract the seeds from the apples in the apple sauce, and the serated edge of the knife blade used to cut the sliver of chocolate left burn marks on my palate, but I give it five stars because you fast-food-masses won't be able to detect these finer details of the eating experience. And I was just shocked that anyone could detect these things, and why the heck was this an answer to my test? Then I was climbing vertically down a flight of stairs by monkeying my way down the banisters, with the goal being to never actually touch the steps. I came to the bottom where the steps turned the opposite direction from before so I had to climb across the staircase without touching it, but as the staircase was more often used at the bottom than the top, it was *much* wider at the bottom, and I realized it would be possible to do it if I climbed up to the top and climbed easily across to start my way down on the other side, so I was about to do that when I realized the only person who cared about it was me, and the only person who knew wtf I was doing was me, so it wouldn't matter if I just got off the banister and walked down the steps like a normal person. Hmmf. permalinkWork 5:35pm JST Monday 19 November 2007 (day 13753) This morning 井上さん uploaded the code that I finished last week. For some reason it wasn't working, but I told 中谷さん that I couldn't research it without access to the production system. So I got the root password. Nice. Turned out the problem was pretty simple: I hadn't specified to make a change to the DB so the data could be stored. I'm surprised actually that the system didn't crash when we tried to run the code against a misshapen DB. Anyways, I added the field and the code worked. I requested a new project after that, which was really easy. Basically it was a cosmetic change to one of the reports. For some reason, they basically wanted me to change stuff stuff stuff stuff stuff 1500 stuff stuff stuff stuff stuff 1200 stuff stuff stuff stuff stuff 2300 stuff stuff stuff stuff stuff 1000 stuff stuff stuff stuff stuff 2200 stuff stuff stuff stuff stuff 1900 stuff stuff stuff stuff stuff 3200 stuff stuff stuff stuff stuff 2400 total 15700 to stuff stuff stuff stuff stuff 1500 - 100 = 1400 stuff stuff stuff stuff stuff 1200 - 100 = 1100 stuff stuff stuff stuff stuff 2300 - 100 = 2200 stuff stuff stuff stuff stuff 1000 - 100 = 900 stuff stuff stuff stuff stuff 2200 - 100 = 2100 stuff stuff stuff stuff stuff 1900 - 100 = 1800 stuff stuff stuff stuff stuff 3200 - 100 = 3100 stuff stuff stuff stuff stuff 2400 - 100 = 2300 totals 15700 - 800 = 14900 , hardcoding the 100 into place. I asked three times about the harcoding, just to make sure I can get lots of time to make the real change if they ever want to make it variable. I made the change, tested the code a couple times, moved it to the production server with my new root access. 8:15pm JST Monday 19 November 2007 (day 13753) Finished another little project today of getting some totals to show up on another page. I'm quite pleased I was able to do it with such a little change to the code I had just written a couple of days ago. I mean in two cases I had written the code so that it could be easily expanded. foreach (array('already', 'added_today') as $var) { print shtuffs } I had written it as a loop with an array even though there was one (1) element in the array. Today I just made it two elements. So beautiful. The other part I had to change was to the mySQL code; this was a bit trickier From this: SELECT up.*, FROM U_P as up {$where_sql} {$order_by} {$limit_sql} To this: SELECT up.*, SUM(up2.ms) as total FROM U_P as up INNER JOIN U_P as up2 ON up.id = up2.id {$where_sql} GROUP BY up.id {$order_by} {$limit_sql} ps: the variable names in the real code are nicely longer, but I'm being super cautious about what code I give out. permalinkfree hugs 9:56pm JST Monday 19 November 2007 (day 13753) From 8:45 to 9:50, an interesting number of free hugs. I'll make a graph: # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # A B C D Where A = 8:45 - 9pm, B = 9pm to 9:15pm, C = 9:15 - 9:35pm, D = 9:35-9:50pm. I don't really know what happened with the dropoff to B, but for C and D my theory is a bit of a sprinkle and I was talking to two guys, although we were holding the sign up. Not really sure if that affected anything, but it's the only differences I could see. They go to Keio and a different university (dang I forgot the name, but it's in Ichigaya), respectively, and the one from Keio kept telling me about his cool Aussie teacher and interest in social issues. When the other guy said he was studying environmental issues, I gave them a single PB postcard to share. I only gave one because I have very few remaining, and I imagine psychologically they will value it more. The non-Keio student had heard of PB and was excited to hear it's near his house when I promoted the samba thing by Francis Silva which will be next-next Saturday (I think). At the very end of our free hug adventure (as in I had been planning to leave 1 minute earlier), three girls came up; one gave me a pretty long hug, and the others gave me 2 and 0 hugs respectively. They were standing around a bit as they chatted to see if they were going to go home or go eat somewhere in Shibuya. I thought they might invite us, and I was thinking "no nononono please don't," because I am pretty hungry (for food) and I don't want to get "close to" any young smiley girl who gave me a long long hug. I'm sure I'd be able to handle the temptation, but I preferred to simply not have to handle it at all. I bid my university friends adeiu and said "bye!" cheerfully to the girls, who didn't seem to notice. Hmmm; maybe it was all in my head. I resisted the temptation to make sure they knew I was leaving, "heyyyy, I'm leaving" [don't you want a last chance to ask me out?] Fortunately, I was able to make my legs carry my silly brain into the train station and not look back. permalinkxkcd permalinkprev day next day |
