Dream

6:35am JST Monday 27 October 2008 (day 14096)

Got on a train at 3:07pm, and the driver was a white American woman; I complimented her on having broken into the train driving profession, and she was like, "thanks!" and then as a couple of college students were getting off, they too talked to the train driver, giving some gossip about the previous driver, and how he had been making mistakes, but kept on the route, being protected by someone behind the scenes.

I became friends with these two girls by virtue of them also talking to the train driver, and we went into the school building. I told one of them about my friend Megumi in Boston, and she asked if Megumi had considered going on a voyage on PB. I was like, "no (*), she was like, ..."

"aw, what is she thinking?" interrupted the girl.

"'I look into it, but I'm not going to sail right now; I'm going to get my documentary skills up, and then maybe go on a voyage and make a documentary of it to help support PB more effectively.'"

(*) in my dream, I had forgotten Megumi has already been on as web reporter.

The girl was like, "OMG that's awesome!"

"I know! When I heard about PB, I was like, 'that's perfect!' and dropped my entire life to go onboard; it was great fun, but now I have nothing to show for it, and I haven't really helped PB all that much."

Stuck on a programming problem that will be a trivially small fix, if I could just find what to fix. Basically I've got some list items and some javascript code that will convert them into sortable items, but it ain't workin'. I think all the code is there; I think all the bits and bobs are in the right place, but apparently something isn't as there or in place as I think.

Men's group tonight, so I'll be leaving in less than an hour. Need to get some foodage on my way there; I've been delaying taking a break because we're so far from any convenis.

Tomorrow, Andrew and I will be meeting with a woman named Jennifer, who's a headhunter for some agency. We're not looking for jobs, but Jennifer is aka Jen from PB! I'm happy to help her get her numbers up for speaking with people.

i group

11:15pm JST Monday 27 October 2008 (day 14096)

We had an open I-group tonight; Takeshi invited a man named Dale, who he knows from his university. We had a light process about things we got / didn't get from our fathers while growing up.

A list of five A-words (which I noted all happen to have double consonants for the second and third letters) as categories: Affection, Attention, Allowing, Appreciation, and Acceptance.

I wrote

  • Acceptance - bicycle rides together

  • Appreciation - "you're smart"

  • Allowing - play outside, use dad's tools, gymnastics

  • Attention - seat on his work table in his workshop

  • Affection - great hugs

  • And then in the negative categories, I was a bit surprised at the first two that came up

    1. never built flying musical car

    2. never saw space shuttle launch

    3. didn't follow through his career as counselor

    4. verbal fights with Ma

    5. Told me not to suck my thumb (*)

    6. Told me Santa Claus was real

(*) I sucked my thumb until I was in 5th grade. (It dwindled off between 3rd and 5th grade, but I remember my final check in 6th grade: I was in the back of the darkened classroom during a film presentation, and I checked the suckability of my thumb. "Nope," I realized, "I don't need to do this anymore."

I'm sorta amazed that I still feel some latent sadness at the first one: we never built a flying car, nor even a musical one. I enjoyed the idea that one day we would work on such a fantastic project together: just me and my Dad, and it would be great. There's still a chance we could do it, but I'm thinking that chance is pretty slim.

I feel less sadness about never having seen a Space Shuttle launch, but a bit less so, perhaps because the promise was made when I was older, and the process by which we would go see a launch isn't magic like a flying car would nearly be.

Anyway, anyway, those are the things I wrote, and I felt some sadness.

After the group, we walked toward the station and talked about David's recent movie, My ex-girlfriend's TV, a 15 minute short which he wrote, and in which he played the main character.

Suggested that he have a screening at The Pink Cow, perhaps during one of their monthly ad-hoc art performance nights.

Said bye to Dale, and then ate curry at an Indian restaurant in 恵比寿, and shared stories about getting screwed over by Japanese passive agressiveness. I told them about having recently had the woman take back her offer to pay me to do her homework (after we had written an agreement (no, she didn't sign it, but she photocopied it for me)). blah blah blah.

Nice to hang out with them.

    11:47pm JST Monday 27 October 2008 (day 14096)

I called Kumi tonight cause she said she would call me this weekend. It was 11:20pm when I called, and she was still at work! Again! She was stuck late at work on Friday (which is when we were originally supposed to meet to talk about my late-night email to her)...

She told me she was still working, so I was like, "まだ?" and then because it's a good pun, I was like, "また?"

And she said my Japanese was good and I appreciated it.

I hope everything is okay with her and her work.
