Manuel Carpet problem

3:11pm JST Friday 20 March 2009 (day 14240)

Manuel was like, "I have nothing to do," cause today's a holiday, and the day that he leaves Japan, so all his stuff is packed, and he's waiting until 4pm for Sakura House peeps to confirm his room is clean and take his key and lock him out of his room.

After he gave us a coin-problem last night; I thought he might enjoy The Carpet Problem. I know I've written it up before, but not sure where. Search for "9 x 12 carpet, 1 x 8 piece, 10 x 10 remainder" or some variant to find the problem and try to solve it yerself.

Miss Carter

Just friended my English teacher from my junior year in high school. I knew her then as Miss Carter.

She messaged me and Mike Gammons to basically say what's up with her.. and I messaged her back directly:

I don't remember Mike Gammons (?), but I remember you!

... perhaps due to having such a huge crush on you that I'm sure most of the young men had.

I'm glad you remember me! Little ol' me trying out for cheerleader on all-girls squad... One of
two guys on 55 person color guard... I guess I broke the mold enough to be memorable! hahaha

Tehran sounds cool! What did you do there? Havest thou a blog of your adventures?

I'm in Japan now and have done a bit of traveling as well... Between two trips around the world
with Peace Boat (as a volunteer teaching English on the ship), I spent 6 weeks in the Palestinian
side of Jerusalem and some other Israeli-locked cities. So important to speak the truth, but seems
difficult in the face of mass media.

I've been keeping my journal online since late 1990s, with several entries transcribed from my high
school days. http://robnugen.com/ for hours and hours of reading pleasure. hahaha!!

Latest endeavors are find a job and promote my paintings (still in the starving artist stage for painting!)

Will do an 8 day intensive emotional cleansing retreat in OZ (4 hours west of Sydney) soon! Have
been doing similar work for 11 years with Mankind Project.

Now I'm just gushing. Did I mention I had a crush on you??

   Love and Light

js kit comment thingie

Hilarious. I just searched for "embed comments website" (with no quotes) and came up with this article:

Quick Embed Code to Add Comments To Any Site. Ah perfect. Read through the comments and one guy was like, "dood why would you trust this little js thing when haloscan is so awesome?"

And a reply was like, "dood, since when is diversity a bad thing? Google started as nuthin' while we had Altavista and Yahoo. Just sayin'"

So then I did a search on haloscan.

Link at the top of their site: NEWS: acquired by JS-Kit. HAHAHAHAHAAHAA

Turns out the article is over 2 years old, which, as this case study suggests, is ancient in terms of the interwhatsit.

So here's the code:

I'ma just testin' it out.

second instance of comment on page

3:08am JST Saturday 21 March 2009 (day 14241)

And now, thought I should be in bed 3+ hours ago, I'm testing putting a second set of comments on the same page, but for a different entry. How will this be handled?

permalink="http://robnugen.com/journal.pl?type=all&date=2009/03/20#second_instance_of_comment_on_page">

Hmmm. Doesn't work. Er, the comments are the same on both instances (as would be expected since they are on the same URI.

3:11am JST

Ohhhhh I didn't set the permalink on the first one. I'll set it on both that one and this one. BRB.

permalink attribute didn't do it, but the path attribute did it.

third

Okay, I've read over the docs a bit and see I don't need to keep including the line <script src="http://js-kit.com/comments.js"></script> everytime. Just once on the page. At the bottom will be best so everything else can load and if js-kit is slow, it won't adversely affect the time for loading the page.

3:37am JST Saturday 21 March 2009 (day 14241)

Well crud. I don't know why the comments don't seem to last beyond a page refresh.

I'm going to try putting the <script ... > line back under each one and see if that helps, but if I understand anything about anything it won't work.

(please don't work please don't work)

3:40am JST Saturday 21 March 2009 (day 14241)

Didn't work. Whew!!

Ah crap, it didn't work.

4:01am JST Saturday 21 March 2009 (day 14241)

Well, it seems to be working by setting the path to /yyyy/mm/dd/entry_name, although that path isn't a legit reference to the entry. Hafta really think about using this comment thing for all my entries, cause if I change the URL... er, actually let's think about this... I could use MOD_REWRITE to slurp the URLs bits and then hit a DB. THEN, the URL would be *correct*, -*and*- not have to change.

But right now I'm goin' to bed.
