I recommend Virtual Box

11:28am JST Saturday 29 August 2009 (day 14402)

There are rare occassions that I want to run a Windows only app. I can think of two: Chrome, and Regex Buddy.

To that end, I have installed Sun's Virtual Box on my MacBook. I can then grab .iso files of the operating system I want to install and install them on a virtual HD via Virtual Box. Then, I can essentially have two computers running on my one physical computer. Wow!!

Right now I have a virtual version of Ubuntu running in a virtual computer:

And I have good ol' OS X running the actual computer.

Allegedly, I have installed Win XP: Pirate Edition on another virtual box.

I *haven't* yet tried running more than one virtual computer at the same time, but I don't see why not try, except I won't right now because my alleged Win XP, when running, chews up a tonne of processing power, and I'm on battery right now.

Next thing to install, just for fun: Turnkey Linux's django software appliance. I'll do that once I get home.

Kelly's wee little party

11:43am JST Saturday 29 August 2009 (day 14402)

Kelly H is celebrating her birthday today, which happens to correspond with some kinda event called "US Friendship Day" (perhaps we should start with... jeez, where? Venuzuela, Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran, Palestine?) at the US embassy apartment complex. (that's my description, but I'm sure it has a different name.) I'll probably join karaoke tonight, (but I've got to start cleaning up Chez Soness!!) we'll see soon!

My wee little visit to Kelly's wee little party

1:35pm JST Saturday 29 August 2009 (day 14402)

Now,

I've had this problem before.

I forgot I didn't have proper id when going to Genny With A G's party one time, and I did it again today. I actually didn't forget it, per se, but I forgot that it's not in my wallet.

BUT

I had a good time talking to Roger, who works for a company that designs 3D graphics chips for mobile devices. He said Apple probably spent 2 or 3 man-months optimizing the cover flow on iPhone to look just like it does on real iTunes, though it's running on a 3D processor with a tenth the processing power.

Met a guy named Mike who works in PR for some company. Didn't really talk shop with him cause I know little about that industry.

It was while in line while talking to Mike that I thought to confirm that my ID was where it should be. D'oh!

Told him, and he was like, "they're not going to let you in," a fact I already knew, and further details that he knows a guy who could get me in on any other day, but "not today; I'm sorry," cause they're dealing with 5000 visitors coming onto the campus.

On my way out, I saw Gemma and a friend of hers. Gave a hug and brief greets. Now I'm in Ebisu station about to ... head home? Yeah. I need to clean the place up for Soness before she gets back!

Turnkey django

2:55pm JST Saturday 29 August 2009 (day 14402)

And now, while ubuntu is running in a virtual computer on my MacBook, I'm installing a software appliance version of Django on another virtual computer on my computer.

You may access this Django appliance over the network using the following methods:

Web: http://10.0.2.15
        https://10.0.2.15
Webmin: https://10.0.2.15.12321
SSH: ssh root@10.0.2.15

For more information visit the TurnKey Linux Website
             http://www.turnkeylinux.org

I'ma try it out now.

Hmm, well I entered those URLs in my web browser, but no response.

But the cool thing is that VirtualBox is running two virtual machines at the same time.

3:58pm JST Saturday 29 August 2009 (day 14402)

Aha! I watched the first 70 seconds of Appliance Installation and Usage on http://www.turnkeylinux.org, and see I need to set VirtualBox to Bridged Adapter. Now it looks like this,

You may access this Django appliance over the network using the following methods:

Web: http://192.168.0.5
        https://192.168.0.5
Webmin: https://192.168.0.5.12321
SSH: ssh root@192.168.0.5

For more information visit the TurnKey Linux Website
             http://www.turnkeylinux.org

And it works!
