Redmine

6:34pm JST Tuesday 16 February 2010 (day 14573)

We use Redmine to handle issue tracking at work. I realized a great thing about it. I can use it as a way to get things out of my brain. It used to be that my brain would overload with trying to keep just a few things in it, "gotta fix this class, therefore change how that code calls the class, and I need to ah crap I forgot the first thing," so now I can just make tickets for each thing, and keep my brain clear. That's exactly what the Getting Things Done book teaches. Write everything down so you don't have to remember *anything*. Just enjoy life!

ice skating with Emiko

10:56pm JST Tuesday 16 February 2010 (day 14573)

Emiko and I went skating at the seasonal outdoor rink in Ï»ËÜÌÚ. Fortunately, there was a bit of precipitation, so not many people were on the rink. Even more fortunately, the temperature was right around freezing, so the precipitation was snow! She was a bit shakey at first, but got much better during the hour or so we were out there. Zipping around the small track, I fell twice. The first time I thought I was just ridiculously clumsy, but the second time I realized what happened: there's basically a brake on the front of the skate! I skate without brakes on my inline skates, so the front brake threw me off, and by off I mean onto the ground!

A group of about 10 English speakers appeared after a bit, and one of them was doing some strange jump thing, so I was like "yo yo whatchoo doing?" and he said he was trying a new jump that his friend the professional skater was teaching them. So I went to her and she taught me the trick of the front brake: it's not a brake, it's a toe pick, and it's not a way to stop, but a way to jump! I can basically skate fast and lean forward onto the left toe pick and jump as hard as possible, landing on my right skate. Cool!! It took me about 4 tries to become comfortable with full speed jumps. I was like "thank you!" to her and she was like "no worries!" and "pretty good jumps!" Nice.

Turns out she's not professional, though she'd like to be. I didn't trade name nor contact info with her, though part of me wants to have.

Emiko got tired before I did, then came back out and we skated some more. Then got tired again and that's when I learned how to jump. I got a bit tired, plus my kneecaps were a bit bruised from my two tumbles, the second of which was more ninja like, as I rolled right back up and kept skating.

kaiten sushi

11:20pm JST Tuesday 16 February 2010 (day 14573)

We sought sustenance and found a sushi shop in the "Casual Dining" area. Not so casual about the prices, 130 yen to 1000 yen per plate = 2 sushi each. I mean 130 is fine, but most things I wanted were at least 280 per plate.

Okay, so anyway, it was fine, and the plates were pretty. I noticed one of the shrimp heads had fallen behind its partner which remained on their plate. After a few revolutions, the lagging shrimp head was removed from the conveyor.

I wondered how long it would take the staff to identify the different plate designs just from the edges. They were different enough that it could certainly be done. I figured it would take about a day of practice to do it confidently enough to not need verification. Or maybe, I thought, maybe the plates each have an RFI tag which can be scanned and thereby priced.

We got full after about 11 plates between us and it came time for my questions to be answered. The waitress took apart our stack of plates, sorted them, and punched in each color's quantity into her hand held thing.

train home

11:32pm JST Tuesday 16 February 2010 (day 14573)

I was slightly low on cash in my wallet and on my PASMO card, so I got a Green Car seat from Ebisu to Ofuna for 750 yen, and just a moment ago moved from Green Car to a normal car, where there are several seats available. Nice.
