|0:00 HI! I'm Rob! As you may have noticed, I like to walk around barefoot! I like to feel connected to the earth and my physical body.|0:20 It all started back in the halcyon days of university, when we had nothing better to do than watch paint dry.|0:40 I also enjoyed carrying around a frisbee! I was known on campus as that barefoot frisbee guy. This picture was taken around my third year in university. This year as a senior.|1:00 In Japan I've been barefoot for about five years and was even featured on TV earlier this year. It was fun to see one of the show directors try being barefoot outside!|

|1:20 I haven't always been barefoot! When I first started, I noticed that I felt two things very keenly. First I felt a little embarrassed and some fear. I was violating some social mores!|1:40 I also felt my feet!! Walking on asphalt surfaces like this can be really painful. For beginner barefooters.|2:00 But the connection to earth and to my own joy were worth it. Khalil Gibran said the earth delights to feel your bare feet|2:20 Speaking of connections, here's a heart, soul, and sole connection! Both times my wife and I celebrated our marriage, I was barefoot! She even joined me the second time. Hi, mom!!|
|[](//b.robnugen.com/rob/presentations/pechakucha_2016/090_everything_is_fine.jpeg)|[](//b.robnugen.com/rob/presentations/pechakucha_2016/100_hiking_montage.png)|[](//b.robnugen.com/rob/presentations/pechakucha_2016/110_stubbed_toe_2015-04-19_11.58.35.jpg)|[](//b.robnugen.com/rob/presentations/pechakucha_2016/120_barefoot_mikoshi.jpg)|
|2:40 Marriage, like barefooting, sometimes has surprises! One time I thought my wife was upset. But when I asked her, what-do-you-know; she said "I'm just fine!"|3:00 So we were hiking along in life, marriage, and hiking trails, and just as I hoped, everything was fine! Here are some pics from hiking in Japan. (there's blood in the next picture so watch out)|3:20 Oh no! And then surprise! It wasn't fine. Completely unexpectedly pain occurs. Maybe lose a job? Get a bad grade?|3:40 What happened? It looks like someone wasn't paying attention to where he was going (or maybe to what he was saying)! And then someone else got hurt.|
|[](//b.robnugen.com/rob/presentations/pechakucha_2016/130_jennie_hides.jpg)|[](//b.robnugen.com/rob/presentations/pechakucha_2016/140_play_ballon_run.jpg)|[](//b.robnugen.com/rob/presentations/pechakucha_2016/150_art_with_feet_2015-12-24_14.02.58.jpg)|[](//b.robnugen.com/rob/presentations/pechakucha_2016/160_feet_at_train_pov.jpg)|
|4:00 So how do we usually deal with this hurt? Hide in a corner? Perhaps behind a pile of paper at work? Perhaps by not saying anything at all?|4:20 What about just feel the feelings and play anyway? Run outside and feel the grass between your toes! Live life and feel the emotions in your heart|4:40 In fact, go out on a limb and share your heart! Make some art! Make it uniquely yours and allow your soul to shine!|5:00 Okay story time. I was at the station one day and the announcer was like, '足元ご注意下さい。' I thought he was talking about me! I looked down and everything seemed okay.|

|5:20 Then I looked up and thought! Ohhh maybe he was encouraging all of us to notice the world around us.|5:40 By being barefoot, I have to notice the world around me, sometimes I see things that really make me feel angry!I want to scream and yell but society doesn't like that.|6:00 I therefore wanted to have a safe place to express my emotions if necessary.|6:20 Wouldn't it be great if we could express our feelings honestly? That's my challenge for you: Notice, Feel, and Express yourself. If you'd like to scream, I'm here for you.|
