back on track

14:34 Saturday 29 April 2017 JST

Well, I have recovered nearly to the point that I was 24+ hours ago before killing connectivity to my VM.

I tried restoring the old VM, but didn't get it working. It's a non-issue at the moment. I have a new VM to which I can connect from my host (allowing SublimeText2 (Registered) to save files to it), and from a sibling guest VM which provisioned the new VM using Ansible.

Eventually I will consider using Packer to do the provisioning, but I shall leave that for after I get my current servers all on newer version of Ubuntu.

Pretty much got everything sorted. I never got the old AB VM to have connectivity again, but my new AB VM is in better shape than the old VM ever was:

The new VM

  1. can send emails
  2. can easily have deploys target specific branches
  3. uses domain names that differ from production by a single character (.cojp vs .co.jp)
  4. uses Ubuntu 14
  5. is fully deployed via Ansible

and that last item means if I lose my physical computer, I can pretty quickly recreate my development environment, at least as far as that VM is concerned.

Hooray for losing connectivity to that old VM!

  1. I wonder why I'm writing an SOML now before the end of the month. Usually they are on the first, or recently, late, or very late.
  2. Lin and I are watching Alien Domicile, and I cannot say I am really expecting much.
  3. For time considerations, I abandoned upgrading to Ubuntu 16. Updating all my projects to use PHP 7 *and* figure out Ansible was too much. Upgrading to only Ubuntu 14 allows me to stay with PHP 5 and just focus on Ansible
  4. And recently, focus on creating a new VM for use locally
  5. Because I unexpectedly killed connectivity to my former local VM and needed to recreate it.
  6. Lin will soon go to her second meeting regarding purchase of 1000万円 company. This time with a CPA to evaluate its expected future value.
  7. I have not done anything with the three styrofoam blocks I bought at the beginning of the month.
  8. We just bailed on Alien Domicile after Lin was like "meh" and I confirmed our suspicions with [these reviews](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6574700/reviews)
  9. We are watching an introduction to Bitcoin! I hope Lin will be more interested in BTC after this.
  10. Aw man. She was like "meh" despite my passionate plea that she try to understand the future potential.
  11. Now we are watching Secret Life of Pets

TL;DR: https://www.packer.io/

Travis gave a fantastic reply to my tale of disconnectivity. I am going to dive in to Packer for a few units of time, and then try to restore connectivity to my old VM, and then try to finish installing site on my new VM, and then try to do the update I wanted to do yesterday morning!

Okay, let's install Packer! Yay! We can do so with brew. But first let's get brew up to date.

$ brew update

worked okay.

$ brew upgrade

is working, but apparently cooking my CPU, mostly to make Python 2 and 3.

I thought brew update would update the packages, and brew upgrade would upgrade itself, but it seems to be the other way around. Anyway, I intended to do both; I just did not think it would take so long.. nearly all the time units available for Packer!

Wow. brew upgrade completed, with these lines near the end of the output:

Upgrading boost --c++11
